Give a solution to the upcoming problem. This is one of the factors why Sulit.ph came to grow as of today. As we transition from newspaper to online marketing in 2006. RJ David is a freelance web developer and Arianne David was a bank project manager.
RJ built the website himself, keeping the consumer's feedback and hence gaining traction even if they just started out by sending an email an invitation to visit the website platform. Though they had a rough start, they are able to quickly capitalize on the hearts of Filipino people and make the selling of second-hand items for Pinoys a breeze.
In 2010, the Naspers Group based in South Africa acquired a majority stake in the platform. After 9 years of being successful in the industry, they rebranded and became OLX Philippines, following the OLX brand.
Sulit was rebranded to better integrate with OLX's global network, which operates in over 45 countries, and to provide more opportunities for buyers and sellers to connect with one another. OLX Philippines maintained its free online classified ad service and expanded its offerings to include cars, real estate, and jobs.
After the changes happened, there are a lot of changes that did happen outside of Sulit and OLX. With the emergence of Facebook Marketplace, the market started to shift the focus of selling online as it is much easier to do that. In my opinion, they actually killed themself by taking a lot of steps to post a simple ad and it was taken down quickly because they want you to pay. With this, their market share in the selling industry came down. As the emergence of E-commerce platforms in the Philippines start to mature.
In 2021, OLX Philippines announced that it would merge with Carousell, another online marketplace platform that operates in Southeast Asia. The merger aimed to combine the strengths of both platforms, including their user base and technology, to create a stronger online marketplace in the region.
The new platform, known as OLX Philippines powered by Carousell, officially launched in July 2021. The platform offers a wide range of goods and services, including cars, real estate, electronics, and fashion, among others. It also features various tools and services to enhance the user experience, such as a chat function, secure payment options, and fraud detection technology.
The merger has created a larger and more diversified marketplace in the Philippines, with over 24 million monthly active users and over 700,000 listings across various categories. The transition from OLX Philippines to OLX Philippines powered by Carousell has been smooth, and the platform continues to be one of the leading online marketplaces in the country.
